Trinity Sunday

Jump to prayer, menu-suggestion

The Feast of the Holy Trinity celebrates a mystery reality that sits at the heart of everything: God’s triune nature. The Trinity is not something that can be fully understood, but the Church helps us understand how to speak about it in a trustworthy way: we believe in three “Persons” in one God. Christians began with their belief in God, their belief that Jesus was fully God, and also their belief that the Holy Spirit was fully God. Understanding how the three relate to each other led them to recognition of the eternal, triune nature of God.

Prayer for your Table

At your table, you might pray part of a famous prayer attributed to St. Patrick:

I arise today through a mighty strength,
the invocation of the Trinity,
through belief in the Threeness,
through confession of the Oneness of the Creator of creation.
May your Salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.
Amen.

Menu Suggestions

In celebration of this feast, you could decorate your table with candles or flowers arranged in “3s” or serve cookies in the shape of triangles or trefoils. Or you may want to make a Tres Leches (“three milks”) cake, a delicious way to remember the threeness of the Trinity. (This cake is best if made a day ahead.)
